The wonderfully attractive Volvo C30 is a cool Scandinavian compact car that blends a sporty coupe look with hatchback practicality. It even becomes a very potent hot hatch in its T5 trim, which boasts a turbocharged 5-cylinder with a fun-to-drive character. However funky and cool the C30 is, one simple upgrade will take driving it to the next level—the Pedal Commander® throttle response controller. It eliminates throttle lag by modifying the factory gas pedal signal with vehicle-specific mapping.

Pedal Commander® connects in line with the stock pedal travel sensor and does not interfere with the ECU, causing no risk or hassle. It gives you four driving modes (Eco, City, Sport, and Sport+) with nine levels for each. You can customize the power delivery with 36 individual settings for better efficiency or instant power on demand. Plus, the subscription-based Anti-Theft mode protects your C30 whenever you need it by disabling the gas pedal completely.

WHAT IS THROTTLE LAG?

When you first press down on the accelerator, there is a delay before anything actually happens. Electronic Throttle Control (ETC) systems cause this as they take the signal from the accelerator pedal when you press it and send it to the vehicle’s ECU. All of this process causes a delay called throttle lag. Besides, manufacturers deliberately leave the delay there because it makes the vehicle suitable for various types of drivers.

Some may need such precautions, but the delay may become frustrating in some scenarios. Pedal Commander® is the easiest and most effective solution for Volvo C30 drivers who want power instantly.

Modern vehicles have electronic throttle systems. Contrary to the old cable throttles, where the pedal was physically connected to the throttle valve, new drive-by-wire systems are completely controlled by the vehicle’s ECU. On top of that, the throttle valve’s opening speed and how much it opens are regulated by the manufacturer’s settings. All of this process and electronic control causes a delay in the initial throttle response, called throttle lag.

The Pedal Commander® throttle response controller modifies the signal from the throttle position sensor. The modified signal transmitted to the ECU makes the throttle valve fully open when you floor the gas pedal, and it also changes the speed the valve operates. The basic steps of the Pedal Commander® installation are always the same regardless of the vehicle's make and model:

Turn off the ignition and wait 10-15 minutes with your driver's door open to allow your ECU to shut down.

Disconnect your accelerator pedal assembly plug, then plug in the heads to connectors on the Pedal Commander® harness.

Clean up the area where you want to mount the control unit with the alcohol wipe. Stick the bracket with the supplied velcro.

After you make sure the cables are secure and won't be tangled, you are ready to enjoy Pedal Commander®.
